Parliament lights up in show of unity and remembrance

22 January 2026

Parliament House lit up in white on Thursday night as part of the National Day of Mourning for victims of the Bondi Beach terrorist attack.

Flags were flown at half-mast all day and Australians observed a minute of silence at 7:01pm AEDT in honour of those impacted by the event which occurred on 14 December 2025.

People were invited to leave a candle on their doorstep or window and the Chabad Community in Bondi chose the theme of ‘Light will win, a gathering of unity and remembrance’.

Australians were also encouraged to come together, share a meal and spend time with family and friends of all faiths and backgrounds.

It was suggested they undertake one or more of the 15 suggested Mitzvah for Bondi. A Mitzvah is an act of kindness, compassion, and a moral responsibility.
