Migrant and refugee entrepreneurs have been celebrated in an exhibition held at Parliament House.

'From Arrival to Impact’ provided an opportunity to acknowledge the incredible stories behind migrant- and refugee-run businesses.

It was put together by ValueNation, a social enterprise which has helped run entrepreneurship and business development programs for migrants and refugees.

‘What we've done through this exhibition is showcase some of their stories,’ said Mohammed Yassin, co-founder of ValueNation.

'We have created an event where people could connect with each other. Connect with service providers, connect with parliamentarians, and really build a common future and a common direction around refugee and migrant entrepreneurship.’

Queen’s Hall was filled with displays depicting the individual journeys of migrants and refugees, from leaving their homes to building successful businesses. Central to those displays was their ambitious spirit.

‘It is very evident, through research and through stories, that people who come here through a migrant or refugee journey are coming here with an entrepreneurial mindset,’ Mr Yassin said.

‘They see the opportunities that Australia provides, and they are keen to actually utilise these opportunities and deliver for themselves, for the family, for the community and the wider society as well.’

Individual stories of migrant and refugee entrepreneurship were displayed around Queen's Hall at Parliament House.

Over a hundred guests attended a lunchtime presentation, all inspired by the incredible journeys of those celebrated.

For many people attending, the opportunity to share their story in Parliament House was invaluable.

‘This was the first time they have attended Parliament House. Actually, this is the first time they have attended any Parliament House in their whole life,’ Mr Yassin said.

‘So, for them to be able to come into this space to connect with parliamentarians, decision makers, it means the world to them.’

The event included speeches from Minister for Small Business Natalie Suleyman and Member for Thomastown Bronwyn Halfpenny, poetry readings and a musical performance.
