Important step forward towards a family-friendly Parliament
8 December 2025
Parliament of Victoria has received accreditation as a breastfeeding friendly workplace by the Australian Breastfeeding Association.
This recognition follows the establishment of various initiatives including the opening of a designated parent and carer facility at Parliament House for members of parliament and dedicated parent and carer facilities for staff and visitors who are breastfeeding, expressing milk, or attending to children’s needs.
The parliamentary administration has introduced a policy that outlines the support, entitlements, and facilities available to help breastfeeding employees balance their parenting and work responsibilities with comfort and dignity.
‘Achieving accreditation as a breastfeeding friendly workplace is significant because it shows how committed we are to making Parliament inclusive of and accessible for all Victorians,’ Speaker Maree Edwards said.
‘Ensuring that women who are breastfeeding have appropriate facilities and the support they need reflects the importance we place on having a family-friendly environment for all who work at and visit our Parliament,’ she said.
This program acknowledges organisations that provide supportive policies, flexible breaks, private spaces and foster a positive culture for breastfeeding employees.
‘We are proud to achieve accreditation. It supports our ongoing work to ensure equitable employment conditions and workplace arrangements at Parliament,’ Ms Edwards said.
‘We want everyone to feel welcome and to know that we support a respectful and inclusive environment for all to enjoy.’
