Mr Macgeorge, a member of the Observatory staff, officially tendered his resignation on 30th September 1872. Four candidates were afforded opportunities of showing their skill in the use of the great telescope, with the one giving evidence of the most fitness chosen. J. Turner, one of the four, was appointed as Mr Macgeorge's successor on 10th February 1874
