Born London, at 22 married Ellen Taylor (children Fanny & George), at 30 married Jane Wilson (children Thomas, Henry and John). Fanny Smith (daughter) was the informant, Edward Jones the doctor, George Thomson the undertaker and John Harvey the Anglican clergyman

His wife Margaret Ashdown nee Bennett was the informant & seaman Patrick McDougall the witness. Archibald Ogilvie was the medical attendant, Augustus Bloomfield the Independent Minister & Jonas Carter (ship carpenter) witnessed the burial. Ashdown was survived by children Henry, Margaret, Mary and George
