Legislative Assembly 60 Parliament First Session
2756: Questions on Notice
Martin Cameron to ask the Minister for Roads and Road Safety —

With reference to the Latrobe River Bridge replacement, which was completed in December 2023 along with works to reinforce Tyers Road so the pre-existing 30 tonne weight limit could be removed:

(1) Why does the Department of Transport and Planning website still state that both Tyers Road and the Latrobe River Bridge have weight limits of 30 tonnes.

(2) Why is there no signage directing locals and truck drivers of the gross mass limit.

(3) Was the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator on site at Tyers Road on the week commencing 4 August 2025; if so, why.

Answer - 8 October 2025

I thank the member for his questions.

Before load limits can be removed, final verification of the new Latrobe River Bridge and culverts installed on the Tyers Road is required by the Department of Transport and Planning’s (DTP) structures team to ensure they have been constructed as designed. The final stage of this process is now completed and NHVR mapping was updated accordingly in late August.

The new bridge has been strengthened to allow for B-Doubles at up to 68.5 tonnes to operate on Tyers Road. Under the heavy vehicle national law, it is the operators and drivers’ responsibility to ensure that a heavy vehicle only travels on a route it is legally permitted to use. They can check this via using the National Network Maps either via the Transport for Victoria website or directly through the NHVR website (NHVR Go). In both cases these websites state that the maps are subject to constant updates, so should be checked before travelling.

The NHVR undertakes enforcement activities across the transport network and does not inform the Department of its routine enforcement operations.
