2717: Questions on Notice
Martin Cameron to ask the Minister for Government Services —

Will the Government advocate to the Federal Government for telecommunications providers to be classified as critical infrastructure and prioritise investment in rural broadband and mobile coverage in Glengarry to address blackspots impacting local businesses, emergency services and residents.

Answer - 8 October 2025

I thank the Member for Morwell for his question and for his advocacy on this important matter.

Reliable telecommunications are vital for regional communities to stay connected, access services, and respond during emergencies. The Victorian Government is investing in improved telecommunications infrastructure through Connecting Victoria and other programs, with 35 mobile and 6 broadband upgrades completed in the Latrobe local government area as of 18 August 2025. A further 4 mobile and 1 broadband upgrade are in progress.

While the Commonwealth Government is responsible for telecommunications services, we continue to advocate for further investment in rural and regional areas, including Glengarry. In 2024, the Victorian Government made a submission to the Commonwealth’s Regional Telecommunications Review, recommending regulatory reform and better support for regional communities.

We welcome the Federal Government’s proposed Universal Outdoor Mobile Obligation by 2027, which will improve mobile voice and SMS coverage across Australia.  Victorian has advocated for strong minimum standards, including quality 4G coverage.

The Department also keeps a list of locations identified by communities as needing improved mobile coverage, including Glengarry. We will continue to advocate for upgrades as opportunities arise.

I trust this information has been of assistance.

Minister for Government Services
