Question on Notice

Legislative Assembly 60 Parliament First Session
1985: Questions on Notice
Martin Cameron to ask the Minister for Health for the Minister for Mental Health —

With reference to the health-led response to public intoxication:

(1) What outreach and alternative support services have been provided to the Latrobe Valley to respond to persons who are drunk in public.

(2) How many referrals has the on-demand outreach team in Latrobe Valley responded to since November 2023.

Answer - 23 February 2026

I thank the Member for Morwell for his question about the public intoxication reform (PIR) service in Latrobe.

The dedicated Aboriginal on-demand outreach service provides support for Aboriginal people in the Latrobe region who are intoxicated in public in a culturally safe way.

Services include in-place supports, and with consent, immediate supports including minor first aid, food and water, phone charging, support to locate friends or family, access to interpreters, assistance to get to public or private transport, or de-escalation if the person is distressed.

Services in the Latrobe region also include active engagement with community and an assertive outreach service which proactively engages with people who appear intoxicated in public.

Since November 2023, more than 1000 instances of on-demand and assertive outreach support have been provided.
