Parliamentary speeches for the Apology to First Peoples.

The Parliament has passed a motion apologising to First Peoples and acknowledging past injustice in a sitting of the Legislative Assembly to which Legislative Council members were invited.

Premier Jacinta Allan spoke to the motion.

‘That this house endorses the apology to First Peoples tabled today, acknowledges the past laws, policies, and practices that have contributed to systemic injustice for First Peoples and affirms that under treaty, Victorians will move together toward a new and better future.’

Text of the motion

The apology was introduced as part of the state's treaty agreement, which was signed into law last month.

Guests gathered in Queen’s Hall to watch the speeches.

Leader of the Opposition Jess Wilson, Minister for Treaty and First Peoples Natalie Hutchins and Greens Leader Ellen Sandell also spoke.

The speeches were streamed to Federation Square and to a live audience in Queen’s Hall at Parliament House.
