The petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council announcements made in Western Australia, the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales that general practitioners (GPs) are allowed to diagnose and prescribe medication for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). There has been no announcement made to allow GPs to be trained to diagnose and treat ADHD in Victoria.
We have children as young as five and adults well into their 50s unable to access care. We are creating a preventable healthcare crisis if this continues. This is a chance for the Government to make the right choice for Victorians, not because it was pushed to but because it chose to. It is a chance for Victoria to lead with compassion and common sense, rather than being the last state to act.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council calls on the Government to allow up to 1,000 general practitioners to be trained to diagnose and treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in line with other Australian states.
