Issue:
This petition of certain residents of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Assembly the intersection of Mornington-Tyabb Road and Racecourse Road, Mornington, which presents serious ongoing safety risks for pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users, including school students, older residents, people with a disability, and mobility scooter users. This intersection is a significant concern for local residents. Pedestrians trying to cross can be left stranded on narrow median islands without adequate protection, creating an unsafe environment at a busy intersection. The danger is heightened during major events at Mornington Racecourse, when traffic volumes and congestion increase, and over the last several months due to traffic diversions and extra traffic linked to the ongoing Peninsula Link roadworks. Mornington Peninsula Shire is also forecast to grow by over 13% by 2046, to 192,000 residents, and the Peninsula’s population already surges to 225,000-250,000 during peak holiday months. This situation will only get worse if not dealt with. Residents have raised concerns about safety at this intersection for a long period, yet no meaningful action has been taken.
Action:
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Assembly calls on the Government to urgently deliver safety improvements at the intersection of Mornington-Tyabb Road and Racecourse Road, Mornington, including immediate interim safety measures and a permanent safety upgrade.
