Issue:
This petition of residents in Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Assembly that the Victorian Labor Government has abandoned the people of Melbourne’s east by walking away from its commitment to fully rebuild Maroondah Hospital, leaving residents without the healthcare infrastructure they were promised. For years, local families were promised a world-class hospital for the eastern suburbs. At the 2018 election, the Government promised a new children’s emergency department which it failed to deliver. At the 2022 election, it promised more than $1 billion for a full redevelopment of Maroondah Hospital which it also failed to deliver. Those promises gave false hope to patients, nurses, doctors and communities across the east that better healthcare was on the way. Instead, the 2026–27 State Budget contains no funding to deliver the full redevelopment of Maroondah Hospital. Maroondah Hospital is one of the busiest hospitals in the eastern suburbs, caring for a growing population. Patients and healthcare workers continue to rely on ageing and inadequate facilities, placing strain on emergency care, surgeries, cancer treatment and mental health services. This is not just a broken promise. It is a betrayal of the communities that rely on Maroondah Hospital for essential healthcare.
Action:
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Assembly calls on the Government to immediately restore funding for the full redevelopment of Maroondah Hospital and honour its commitment made to the people of Melbourne’s eastern suburbs by delivering the complete hospital rebuild as a matter of urgency.
