Senior high school students and their teachers are invited to attend the Deakin Oration 2019 at Parliament House to hear from Victoria’s first female Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Two students and one teacher from each Victorian secondary school can nominate to attend this free event. As places are limited, please nominate early by emailing us or phone 8682 2814.

For students and teachers in and around Bendigo and Traralgon, the Victorian Parliament will provide free bus transport to Parliament House and return on the day to enable your participation. Please indicate when nominating if you wish to take up this offer.

The Deakin Oration 2019

Friday 6 September 2019 from 2pm-4pm
Queen’s Hall, Parliament House, Melbourne
Professor Marilyn Warren will speak about the modern relevance of Alfred Deakin.
The event will include a question and answer session for students.

Professor the Hon Marilyn Warren AC QC

Professor Warren was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria in November 2003, serving in that role until October 2017. She is a Vice-Chancellor’s Professorial Fellow at Monash University, which includes contributing to teaching and learning activities within the Faculty of Law and advancing the University's interactions with the community.

What is the Deakin Oration?

The Deakin Oration is an annual presentation at Parliament House honouring Australia’s second Prime Minister and Victorian MP, Alfred Deakin and giving a contemporary context to the issues he was interested in during his parliamentary career. It is an opportunity to hear from a prominent Victorian about topical issues.
