Legistrative Council E-Petitions

E-petition Number
391
Title
Investigate building a high-speed rail network
Grievance
The Petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council the importance of reducing air travel emissions to mitigate risks associated with climate change.

Victoria is the most densely populated state and the Melbourne to Sydney air corridor was one of the busiest in the world prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. This makes Victoria the best place to start building a high-speed rail network, like the Train à Grande Vitesse (TGV) network in France.

The construction and maintenance of rail infrastructure, linking Geelong, Melbourne’s city centre, Melbourne airport and the New South Wales border along the Melbourne to Sydney rail route would also create jobs.
Action
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to seek advice from France about their Train à Grande Vitesse high-speed rail service and investigate building a high speed rail network in Victoria, linking Geelong, Melbourne’s city centre, Melbourne airport and the New South Wales border along the Melbourne to Sydney rail route.
