Legistrative Council E-Petitions

E-petition Number
383
Title
Reject Forests Legislation Amendment (Compliance and Enforcement) Bill 2019
Grievance
The Petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council the Forests Legislation Amendment (Compliance and Enforcement) Bill 2019.

We are concerned that there is no provision for the right to defend under section 45 of the Bill. This makes it unconscionable in a modern democracy and cannot be supported in its current form.

We believe that, should the Bill come into force in its current form, the forest workers will face serious prosecution, up to jail time, for unwittingly breaching the Code of Practice.

Forest contractors, who were fighting fires to protect the State when this Bill was introduced in the Legislative Assembly, already face illegal and dangerous behaviour by activists, and an uncertain future as timber supply is impacted by vexatious legal action and natural disaster.

The Forests Legislation Amendment (Compliance and Enforcement) Bill 2019 contributes to this unnecessary stress.
Action
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council reject the Forests Legislation Amendment (Compliance and Enforcement) Bill 2019.
