Apprenticed as engineer in Hawick and finished indentures with a firm in Galashiels; various engineering experience in Britain, including gas works engineering; selected in 1853 on a five year engagement to erect gasworks in Melbourne; soon after arrival 1854, won prize for a refuse disposal plan for Melbourne; carried out projects in Vic. and other colonies, including gasworks for Ballarat, Castlemaine, Sandhurst and Newcastle. Major of artillery regiment 1863.
