Question on Notice

Mr Bull (Gippsland East) to ask the Minister for Roads and Road Safety — East Gippsland Shire Council operates outreach centres in some of the more remote towns in East Gippsland. Omeo and Mallacoota centres offer limited VicRoads services to remove the travel burden of those living in these outer lying communities.

It is understood that East Gippsland Shire Council has approached VicRoads to share the increasing operating costs of the centres but VicRoads will not meet the council in the middle financially to support continued operations. There is concern that VicRoads services are under threat and it may force residents to travel to the Bairnsdale office for customer support. For Mallacoota residents, this is a seven hour round trip:

Will the Minister consider contributing equitably to the operational service centre costs with East Gippsland Shire Council to retain this important service.

I thank the Member for Gippsland East for his question.

A meeting was held between the Department of Transport (DoT) and the East Gippsland Shire Council (the Council) in late 2020 where the Council first raised its concerns regarding their operating costs and service fees for providing limited services.

Since this meeting, no formal or informal approach has been made by the Council to DoT regarding a review of the current service fee schedule.

DoT will consider any formal approach from the Council to review their service fees to ensure the continuity of services in their Shire.

The Hon Ben Carroll MP

Minister for Public Transport

Minister for Roads and Road Safety
