Admitted writer to the Signet, Scotland, 1820 and practised Supreme Court; arrived Port Phillip Aug 1841; admitted attorney, and practised Bourke Street Melbourne; briefly partnered J.B. Quarry, later, c1853-1857, John Clarke. Major, Vic. Yeomanry Corps 1855, lieutenant-colonel 1858, in command of all cavalry corps 1861 and lieutenant-colonel of the Prince of Wales Volunteer Light Horse 1863. Member Port Phillip Orphan Immigration Committee and Board of Guardians 1848. Freemason.
