Treasures on show in the Deakin Gallery at Parliament House

Named in honour of Australia’s second Prime Minister Alfred Deakin, who started his political career at the Victorian Parliament, the historic space has been renovated recently and includes a number of rare and precious documents from the Parliament House collection that will be on display for Open Day.

One of the most precious is the sketch book ‘Victoria the Golden’ by famed colonial era history painter William Strutt.

The Deakin Gallery will also have on display the Federation Roll from 1899, the original voting roll for Australia’s first national election, and copies of The Age and The Argus newspapers dating back one hundred years, showing what was making news in March 1915.

Entry is free to Parliament House Open Day

Alongside the historic treasures, Parliament House Open Day will feature informative displays on the current work of the Victorian Parliament, including information on some of the latest public inquiries by parliamentary committees.

Visitors to the building will be able to gain a true parliamentary experience by touring the chambers of the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council.

Hansard staff will be on hand to demonstrate how the voice of the Victorian Parliament is recorded and broadcast.

Organisations with a link to Parliament will also have displays, including the Ombudsman, Auditor-General’s Office, Public Record Office and, for the first time at Open Day, the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC).

To make it a complete day out, there will be entertainment plus the opportunity to taste the renowned Victorian parliamentary scones as well as a sausage sizzle in the magnificent gardens, which will also be open to walk through.

Entry is free. Everyone is welcome at Spring Street in Melbourne.
