The Parliament of Victoria has referred to the Education and Training Committee a reference for inquiry, consideration and report no later than 31 March 2008 on dress codes and school uniforms in Victoria, in particular:

1. the benefits and costs of mandatory school uniforms;
2. the views of school communities about dress codes and school uniforms;
3. the most cost efficient and practical uniform procurement arrangements;
4. matters which need to be considered to ensure dress codes and uniform policies are consistent with anti-discrimination legislation and health promotion policies;
5. appropriate enforcement and sanctions;
6. appropriate exemption criteria and processes; and
7. national and international trends.
