Parliament Role Play
The Parliament of Victoria offers an exciting program for year 5, 6 and 7 classes visiting Parliament House. The Parliament Role Play provides a chance for students to act out different roles in Parliament and pass their own law.
Students use the Legislative Assembly Chamber, dress up and use props. They act in the roles of Speaker, Clerk, Serjeant-at-Arms, Premier, Leader of the Opposition and front benchers. Students choose an issue to debate, read from prepared scripts and vote on a proposed law.
Role plays are conducted by experienced staff members who regularly work with school groups visiting Parliament. The topics covered are designed to assist in meeting Level 4 of the Civics and Citizenship domain of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). Role play teaches students how the Parliament of Victoria:
- makes laws
- provides representative democracy for Victorians
- has a rich and colourful history.
Parliament role play makes learning about Parliament fun!
