Opening of Parliament’s Cartoon exhibition
Drawn on the Issues, 150 years of State Political Cartoons

The Speaker of the Parliament of Victoria, Judy Maddigan MP, will launch on Monday, 6 March 2006 , as part of the 150 th Anniversary Celebrations of Parliament in Victoria , an exhibition entitled, Drawn on the Issues , 150 years of State Political Cartoons.

“In the exhibition we have tried to show the issues of the day through the cartoonists' eyes,” Judy Maddigan said. “We have found some priceless and very humorous cartoons from as early as 1856 and as late as February 2006.”

“It's amazing to see how over the years the same issues keep recurring such as late trains, Commonwealth/State funding and political party feuding,” she said.

“This is a wonderful collection from our State's finest cartoonists from the major metropolitan newspapers and journals of the times. Never before has such a collection been exhibited in one place. We invite and encourage everybody to come down to Parliament House, to have a giggle and marvel at the comic wit illustrating important issues and politicians of the day throughout our 150 years of democracy in Victoria.”

The Speaker also said, “We are thrilled that cartoonists Ron Tandberg from The Age and Mark Knight from The Herald Sun will be at the launch to mark the occasion with a unique and special cartoon.”
