Parliament Taps into Water Savings

The Parliament of Victoria is ensuring its support for water saving programmes with the installation of five water storage tanks in the grounds of Parliament House.

Judy Maddigan MP, Speaker of the Parliament, said, “An initiative from the Garden’s Unit at Parliament House was recommended to me for the installation of the five storage tanks. These tanks are situated close to annexe buildings within the grounds, enabling rainwater runoff to be collected.”

Mr Paul Gallagher, Manager of the Parliament House Gardens Unit, has installed the five storage tanks, which have a capacity to store 60,000 litres of rainwater runoff.

Judy Maddigan said, “The water collected will be used by the Garden’s Unit to assist with their restricted use of mains water to maintain the Parliament House Gardens. I am pleased that with rain in the recent weeks, these water storage units are fully operational with water collected.”

“The Parliament House Gardens are an important part of our precinct, which were established through the 1860’s and 1870’s by famous landscape designers Clement Hodgkinson and William Guilfoyle. William Guilfoyle is best known for his contribution to the Royal Botanical Gardens, Melbourne”, said Judy Maddigan.

“The Parliament House Gardens, like all Victorian parks and gardens, are maintained to their best ability in this time of infrequent rain. This initiative is the Parliament’s way of showing its commitment to assist in saving water”, said Judy Maddigan.
