Dr. K.A. Coghill was born in Mansfield in Victoria. He was educated at Caulfield Grammar School and holds a Batchelor of Veterinary Science from the University of Melbourne. Before entering Parliament Dr Coghill was a Veterinary Officer with the Department of Agriculture in Wodonga, and a Councillor with the Wodonga City Council.
He was first elected MLA for Werribee on May 5 1979 and re-elected in 1982, 1985 and 1988. During his time in the Legislative Assembly Dr Coghill was spokesperson on Animal Welfare and Aboriginal Affairs. He was Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from October 1988 to 1995.
Since retiring from Parliament he has gained a Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Melbourne.
Dr. Coghill is now Associate Director of the Monash Mt Eliza Business School at Monash University. He continues to take a keen interest in parliamentary accountability and reform, particularly through his work as an academic at Monash University.
He is married and has two children.
