Vernon Christie was born in Sydney and educated in Queensland, Tasmania and New South Wales. He worked initially as a clerk and then qualified as an accountant (Associate of the Australian Society of Accountants) by part-time attendance and correspondence. He had his own accountancy practice for two years.

In 1934 Christie married Joyce Crozet Hamlin and in 1939 he moved to Melbourne where he became an executive in a series of companies. He entered the Legislative Assembly in 1955 as the Liberal member for Ivanhoe, and retained the seat until 1973. He was chairman of committees in 1956-61, Speaker in 1967-73, and was knighted in 1972.

After his retirement from parliament in 1973 Christie moved to Queensland. He had a long-standing interest in theatre, music and ballet. He and his wife had three children. He died in 1994.
