The Honourable Alex Andrianopoulos was elected Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Victoria on 3 November 1999.

Mr Andrianopoulos was born in Tselepakou, Tripolis, Greece on 1 January 1955.

He migrated to Australia with his parents and sister in 1965.

His family settled in St.Albans where Mr Andrianopoulos attended St.Albans North Primary School, and St.Albans High School.

On completing the Higher School Certificate he was employed in the pay office of a local white-goods manufacturer, and studied accountancy part-time at Footscray Institute of Technology.

From 1982, until he was elected to Parliament in 1985, he was employed as an Electorate Officer for the State Member for Keilor Mr George Seitz MLA.

Mr Andrianopoulos was a Councillor in the City of Keilor from August 1980 until 1984.

In 1984 Mr Andrianopoulos sought Labor Party Preselection for the newly formed Legislative Assembly seat of St.Albans, which he duly won at the 1985 State election.

He was re-elected at the 1988 State election.

When the State electorate of St.Albans was abolished in the 1990-91 electoral redivision Mr Andrianopoulos gained his party's endorsement to stand in the newly formed State seat of Mill Park.

He was elected as the Member for Mill Park in 1992 and was re-elected in 1996 and 1999.

Mr Andrianopoulos held positions as Shadow Minister for Ethnic Affairs in 1993 and Secretary to Shadow Cabinet from 1993 until the September 1999 election.

During his Parliamentary career he has served on a number of Parliamentary Committees including the Economic & Budget Review Committee, Public Bodies Review Committee and Federal State Relations Committee.

Mr Andrianopoulos is married to Virginia and they have a daughter, Johanna.

He is the first migrant from a non English speaking background to be elected Speaker of the Victorian Parliament.
