I am pleased to introduce the
Committees Annual Review for 2001.
This review mainly concerns the scrutiny of Bills introduced during
2001 and provides a summary of the other scrutiny and inquiry work undertaken by the
Committee in 2001.
The Committee continues its sound tradition of bipartisan scrutiny of
Bills and regulations within its specified terms of reference. I take this opportunity to
thank the Chairs of the respective subcommittees of the Committee for the very fine work
performed by them in discharging their reporting responsibilities in a timely manner and
for providing quality reports for the consideration of the Parliament. I thank all Members
of the Committee for their professionalism and co-operation during a very demanding year
in the life and work of the Committee.
The Committee had two changes in membership during the year. In
September 2001 the Hon. Maree Luckins MLC and Mr Martin Dixon MLA retired from the
Committee and were succeeded by the Hon. Andrew Olexander MLC and the Hon. Robert
Maclellan MLA. I welcome the new Members and thank the departing Members for their service
on the Committee.
The Committee is fortunate to have a dedicated and professional team of
legal advisers and support staff, and I take this opportunity to thank our Senior Legal
Adviser Andrew Homer for effectively leading the team during 2001. I also thank the
members of the Scrutiny team for their advice and support during the year, Jenny Baker,
Legal Adviser (Regulations), Simon Dinsbergs, Assistant Executive Officer and Richard
Kings, Office Manager.
