MONASH UNIVERSITY ACCIDENT RESEARCH CENTRE
SPEED REVIEW

A study was commissioned by the Roads and Traffic Authority of New South Wales in conjunction with the Federal Office of Road Safety to review what is known about speed and:

The research was intended to provide directions for future speed research and development towards reducing speed related crashes.

An extensive literature review was undertaken and a one-day workshop was held in conjunction with the Road Safety Researchers Conference in Canberra during 1992 to help identify pressing issues. The project report listed 12 action items requiring further research and prioritised these items in terms of their importance and value in reducing excessive speeding.

One important figure shown in the speed review report 1 was a diagram prepared by Nilsson based on a series of empirical functions that he argued explains the relationship between changing the speed limit and road safety in Sweden. The data was obtained from at least 50 different investigations of speed limit changes in Sweden in rural and urban areas. (The diagram is reproduced in Figure E.3 in the next appendix.)
