Explanatory Notes
Figure G1: Statewide - Speed Camera Hours Worked Versus Percent Detected Above Threshold
This figure shows the relationship between speed camera hours worked per month and the percentage of vehicles detected above the threshold (ie the posted speed limit plus 9 km/h) since July 1990.
In 1990 and 1991 there was a strong trend for the proportion of detected vehicles above the speed threshold to decline as the number of speed camera hours increased. Since 1992 the Victoria Police have been maintaining camera hours at the high level of 4000 hours per month. The percentage of vehicles exceeding the threshold has continued to decline, but at a reduced rate.
Figure G2: Speed Camera Impact On Driver Behaviour
These diagrams show the percentage of vehicles detected above the threshold speed for each camera location film session in July 1991, July 1992 and July 1994.
The State average can be seen to have declined from 12.2% in July 1991 to 3.54% in July 1994.
Perhaps more significantly there has been a marked reduction in the number of locations with excessively high proportions of vehicles travelling above the threshold speed (as shown by the orange dots).
