The Functions of the Rural and Regional Committee

The Rural and Regional Committee is a Joint Investigatory Committee of the Parliament of Victoria. It was first established in 2007. The Committee comprises seven Members of Parliament drawn from both Houses and all Parties. The Committee elects the Chair.

The powers and responsibilities of the Rural and Regional Committee are determined by the Parliamentary Committees Act 2003 . The functions of the Committee, as defined by the Act, are:

To inquire into, consider and report to the Parliament on any proposal, matter or thing concerned with the provision of services to, or the development of, regional Victoria if the Committee is required or permitted so to do by or under the Act.

Matters are referred to the Committee either by resolution of the Council or the Assembly or by Order of the Governor in Council. The Parliamentary Committees Act 2003 also enables a Joint Investigatory Committee to inquire into and report to Parliament on any annual report or other document relevant to its functions and which have been laid before either House of Parliament.
