Was a clerk in Leith; arrived Port Phillip Dec 1840 and established an importing business; was joined by Alfred Ross c1845 in firm of Westgarth, Ross & Co., and later by James Spowers in firm of Westgarth, Ross & Spowers; returned to England 1857 and retired from partnership c1863. Formed finance house of Wm Westgarth & Company and became expert adviser on colonial loans. Founder and first president Melbourne Chamber of Commerce 1851-1852.;
