Assistant surgeon on emigrant ship which arrived Sydney 1839; employed by Aust. Agric. Company and mngd Warrah on the Liverpool Plains; in 1842 to Port Phillip to manage station properties; went to California gold rush and returned; began horse bazaar and auctioneering business of Dougharty & Company in 1850s; became auctioneer for Kaye & Butchart, junior partner c1861; after retirement of Kaye c1869, firm became Butchart & Dougharty; was later sole owner, until he took his son and Mr Parker into partnership c1873.;
