Education: Melbourne Diocesan School 1853-1855, King's College London, and in Europe; entered Trinity College Cambridge, and Lincoln's Inn 1861; matriculated same year, but did not proceed to a degree.

Career: Called to Bar June 1865; returned Melbourne and admitted Vic. Bar Dec 1866; built up a large practice and became famous advocate. President Aust. Natives' Association 1888-1889. QC 1886.
