Career: Clerk Bank of Vic. till 1881, later a director; became interested in mining and railways; formed Knox, Schlapp & Co., mine owners and engineers; co-operated in formation B.H.P. and Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company; director of each, and first secretary B.H.P.; connected with other railway and mining companies. Founder and president Chamber of Mines of Vic.; president Chamber of Commerce 1904-1907; member Melbourne Stock Exchange from 1888; Aust Natives' Association; M. Am.I.M.F., M.A.I.M.E.; declined knighthood.
