Bars 1861; practised in Melbourne; appointed law lecturer Melbourne University 1863 and certifying barrister to friendly societies. Trustee, Public Library and National Gallery 1873; fellow Linnean Society; president Field Naturalists' Club. Degree of LL.D, Camb. conferred on him 1870. QC 1887.
