Education: Village schools and began acting at early age

Career: Arrived Sydney 1843; acted there and in Van Diemen's Land, South Australia, NZ and Vic.; formed various theatre companies and brought out celebrated actors from England; mixed these interests with hotel-keeping, mining, racing and investment and was several times insolvent. Established Vic. Humane Society and St John Ambulance in Melbourne Originated Old Colonists' Association. Leading freemason.
