Prime Minister Kevin Rudd moves a motion in the House of Representatives to say sorry to Australia's Aborigines. In his historic speech, he says "... For the pain, suffering and hurt of these Stolen Generations, their descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry. To the mothers and the fathers, the brothers and the sisters, for the breaking up of families and communities, we say sorry. And for the indignity and degradation thus inflicted on a proud people and a proud culture, we say sorry...."

Bushfires rage across parts of Victoria as a result of searing winds and the highest temperature ever recorded in our nation's history (46.4 degrees). The official death toll stands at 173, making this the worst natural disaster in Australia.

Premier John Brumby and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announce the establishment of the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority (VBRRA) to be headed by Victoria Police Chief Commissioner, Christine Nixon. The VBRRA will examine the fatal bushfires which raged throughout Victoria on 7 February and days after.
