3.7 VICTORIAN CODE OF PRACTICE FOR IN-WATER HULL CLEANING
In recognition of the risks posed to the environment by exotic marine species, the Victorian Channels Authority banned in-water hull cleaning on 1 January 1997. The Code54
· Applies to vessels over 200 gross tonnes in the waters of Melbourne, Geelong, Hastings and Portland. It will be necessary for other agencies, such as the EPA, to put into place a Code or regulations to cover other vessels.
· Allows for the cleaning of sea chests, sea suction grids and other apertures provided the debris does not enter the water column, and permits polishing of propellers. An application to carry out these works must be lodged five days prior to commencement of work.
