Maree Luckins

Maree Luckins talking with group of students

Maree Luckins is the youngest woman to be elected to the Legislative Council. She was elected in 1996 at the age of 28. Maree related the story of her start in politics at a young age, when her friends dared her to stand for pre-selection. She had come from a family with a strong background in politics and had joined the Young Liberals at age 16. Maree became the first sitting Member of the Legislative Council to give birth to a child while in office. There is no maternity leave for MPs, but Maree assured the girls that it is possible to balance one’s commitments to family and the electorate. She noted that the male MPs who have young families are not questioned about how they cope with balancing family life and political life! Maree urged the girls to support each other, to support themselves and to take advantage of every opportunity presented to them.
