YOUNG
WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP SEMINAR
Judy Maddigan is the first woman to be appointed Deputy Speaker in the Parliament of Victoria. Unlike Maree, Judy became involved in politics comparatively late in life. She first became politically active through a dispute over a local park. Judy was elected to local council. She recommended involvement in local government to the girls because it is a great opportunity to do something positive for the community and to learn about how a government operates. Judy then spoke about the continued need for an Office of Women’s Affairs because gender discrimination still exists in our society. Although women are now working in all sorts of areas previously dominated by men and they receive equal pay for equal work, women are still under-represented in the top levels of business and the professions. The number of women in leadership roles was increasing, but there is still a long way to go, so Judy encouraged the girls to become active in politics in order to bring about change.
