YOUNG
WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP SEMINAR
Joan Kirner told the girls the story of how she became involved in politics as a young mother, trying to improve teacher-student ratios at her son’s school. Her advice to the young women was firstly, value yourself. As well as a sense of self-worth and a set of values by which you live, one also needs a sense of purpose. Joan urged the girls to work with and for others when they wanted to change something in their community. Working as part of a team and being persistent were the keys to getting things done. As a leader, one needs to be aware of the context in which a particular issue is being played out, so Joan encouraged the girls to continue their education and keep up to date with current affairs.
