Summary of the reports from the discussion groups

Student presenting group findings to the audience

What opportunities for leadership exist for young women?
Student Representative Council, Peer Support programs, school leadership groups, Junior Council (at local government level), School Cadets, debating teams, bands, community groups, charities.

What are the qualities of a good leader?
A good leader is someone who is: understanding, confident, a good listener, encouraging, responsible, one who sets goals, energetic, focused, a team player, honest, respectful, caring, selfless, charismatic, determined, committed, a hard worker, articulate, one with a sense of humour, creative and inspirational.

Are some issues "women’s issues"?
Yes: IVF for lesbian couples, discrimination, body image, equal opportunity (eg: wrestling for women), maternity leave, family values, abortion, equal pay, stereotypes, diversity, advertising, the portrayal of women in sport.

Why do you think that women are still under-represented in Parliament and at senior management level in the business world?
Men not giving women a chance. Result of stereotyping women. Women need to be more aggressive and men need to soften up a bit. Some women lack confidence. Intimidation. Others not encouraging them. Family commitments.

What have you learnt from today’s Seminar?
Follow your dreams. Stand up and be counted. Have the courage of your convictions. Become aware of the issues. Don’t be afraid to do something. Be persistent. Becoming involved in local government or environment groups can be a great start.

How will you encourage other girls to be active citizens?
Encourage them to seek help of mentors. Attend seminars such as this. Look after each other and ourselves.
