Select Committee Inquiries for the 56th Parliament:

The Legislative Council appointed two Select Committees during the 56th Parliament to inquire into the following:

Gaming Licensing This Committee tabled its final report on 8 May 2008
Public Land Development This Committee tabled its final report on 11 September 2008

The following guidelines have be prepared to assist with the prepararion of written submissions and evidence at Public Hearings.

Function and Powers

Standing Orders provide for the establishment of a Select Committee to inquire into any issue.

The function of a Select Committee is to inquire into a specific issue in a set timeframe. When it reports back to the House it can include any findings and recommendations for further action by either the Government or the House.

The power of Select Committees to send for persons, documents and other things is outlined in the Council's Standing Orders (specifically S.O. 24.10).

Membership

Standing Orders require the number of Members appointed to a Select Committee be more than 5 and less than 10, unless the leave of the Council is sought.

The establishment motion for each Select Committee details the number of Members to be appointed and the composition regarding representation by political parties.
