Opportunities for Debate

Matters of Public Importance

Summary

The time provided for Matters of Public Importance (MPIs) allows members to initiate discussion on topics of concern.

Discussion procedure

1 Selection of topic.  Prior to sitting, the topic to be discussed is reviewed and decided by the Speaker,  according to a set of strict criteria.  The topic is proposed, in alternating order, between the government and non-government members.

Discussion days.  MPI debates take place every sitting Wednesday morning, other than every third Wednesday morning, which is set aside for grievances.

Length of discussion.  The MPI debate lasts a maximum of two hours.  The first government and non-government speakers can speak for 15 minutes.  Other members can speak for a maximum of 10 minutes each.
