The budget provides for government expenditure over the following financial year.

| 1 | The budget. Also known as the annual appropriation bill, the budget is usually introduced by the Treasurer in May. |

House of origin. All budget bills must originate in the Assembly. |

Amendments to the budget. The Council can debate the budget bill, but cannot amend it. |

Timeframe. Once the budget bill has been passed by the Assembly, the bill must be passed by the Council within one month or it is automatically sent to the Governor for royal assent. |

Budget debate. The Treasurer has unlimited speaking time when introducing and debating the budget. Similarly, the Shadow Treasurer has unlimited speaking time when responding to the budget. Debate on the budget can take several weeks. |
