Schools’ Constitutional Convention held at Parliament House

More than 80 senior secondary students from across Victoria have taken their seats in the Legislative Assembly for the 2014 Schools' State Constitutional Convention.

Opened by Parliamentary Secretary for Education Clem Newton-Brown and chaired by Speaker Christine Fyffe, the convention provides students with opportunities to explore contemporary political and social issues, promotes student understanding of the Australian system of government and demonstrates how the Australian Constitution provides the framework for our democracy.

Parliament honours first Australian born Governor-General

A section of the Victorian Parliamentary Library has been renamed in honour of Sir Isaac Isaacs (1855-1948), who served as a member of both the Victorian and Australian Parliaments and became the first Australian born Governor-General in January 1931.

President of the Victorian Legislative Council Bruce Atkinson made the announcement at the unveiling of a new portrait of Isaacs, on loan to the Victorian Parliament from the Jewish Museum of Australia.

Parliament House graduation for young Muslim leaders

Participants in this year's Muslim Leadership Program run by La Trobe University's Centre for Dialogue have held their graduation ceremony at Victoria's Parliament House.

Speaker Christine Fyffe welcomed the graduates, who had completed a five week course involving workshops, seminars and lectures on domestic and international issues.

MP fines help fight bowel cancer

Fines imposed on MPs by the Victorian Legislative Assembly will this year be helping the fight against bowel cancer.

Speaker Christine Fyffe has presented cheques worth $11,717.54 to Bowel Cancer Australia.
