The Serjeant-at-Arms, Anne Sargent is the Speaker's Executive
officer. The responsibilities of the Serjeant-at-Arms include:
- Executing the orders of the Speaker and the House.
- Providing policy advice to all Members.
- Arranging and co-ordinating ceremonial functions.
- Attending the Chamber when Parliament is sitting.
- Responsibility for arranging Members' accommodation and travel requirements.
- Supervising the Legislative Assembly attendant and cleaning staff.
- Admittance and control of the public and the media to Parliament and tour programs.
- Responsibility for works and services within the Assembly precincts.
The Serjeant-at-Arms has additional responsibility, in conjunction with the Usher of the Black
Rod for:
- Security, fire protection of the Parliament building and its environs, security
and identification passes, emergency evacuation procedures.
- Supervision of the Protective Services Officers stationed at Parliament House.
The Serjeant-at-Arms office also has responsibility for the attendant staff of the
Legislative Assembly who, under the supervision of the Principal Attendant, provide
numerous house-keeping duties throughout the building. These duties include staffing of:
- The Vestibule Desk which is the main reception point for Parliament House.
- The Correspondence Box which provides administrative support to both the Legislative
Assembly and the Parliament as the initial point of contact for all tours to the House,
as well as being responsible for general mail distribution.
- The Post Office which provides all Australia Post facilities, as well as high volume
photocopying for the Parliament.
- Public tours.
