The time provided for Matters of Public Importance (MPIs) allows members to initiate discussion on topics of concern.

| 1 | Selection of topic. Prior to sitting, the topic to be discussed is reviewed and decided by the Speaker, according to a set of strict criteria. The topic is proposed, in alternating order, between the government and non-government members. |

Discussion days. MPI debates take place every sitting Wednesday morning, other than every third Wednesday morning, which is set aside for grievances. |

Length of discussion. The MPI debate lasts a maximum of two hours. The first government and non-government speakers can speak for 15 minutes. Other members can speak for a maximum of 10 minutes each. |
