The grievance debate gives members the opportunity to raise matters concerning individual circumstances or other issues of significance.

| 1 | Provisions. Provision for the grievance debate is outlined in Standing Order 38. |

Origin. It is believed that the grievance debate stems from an old Westminster practice whereby open debate and criticism occurred before the budget was agreed to by the House of Commons. |

Discussion days. The debate takes place on the first Wednesday of a sitting period and every subsequent third sitting Wednesday. Members are called ‘to grieve’ on issues. |

Timeframe. The whole debate lasts for two hours, or until eight members have spoken, whichever is the shorter. Members have a maximum of 15 minutes each in which to speak. |
