The adjournment debate, which is conducted after all other business for that day is completed, provides an opportunity for members to raise an issue of ‘urgent Government administration’.

| 1 | Purpose. The adjournment debate allows members to draw the attention of ministers to an issue which requires action. |

Timeframe. The adjournment debate takes place at the end of each sitting day. It lasts for a total of 30 minutes, or until 10 members have spoken, whichever is the shorter. Each member has a maximum of three minutes in which to raise their concern. |

Ministerial response. Ministers can respond to the members’ concerns during a total of 30 minutes. If the relevant minister is not present, another minister may choose to respond on their behalf. |
